I think you’ll agree with me on this:
You can change your future by changing your attitude.
You see, attitude is one thing in life that you can control and mold to your liking. And the moment you change your attitude, everything changes.
We all know that the key to changing your future is to change how you see things around you. And with the right attitude, you can turn roadblocks into opportunities.
Let me share an incident with you to highlight how important changing your attitude can be.
It was March 2010.
A Noida-based private software training company hired me for a contractual job.
My responsibilty? To conduct personality development classes for B. Tech students at Subharti University (SITE), Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
10th March: My First Day to Subharti University
A female teacher and I were on our way to the college in the company cab.
“Sir, it’s your first day. What do you have in mind? I mean, what will you teach today?” She asked me.
“Well, ma’am, I would like to meet my students first, and only then can I create my strategy.”
“Sir, let me tell you something. You see, I have been teaching at this University for the last four months. And believe me when I say it’s no use putting much effort into these students.”
“What makes you say so?” I was curious.
“Sir, these kids are impossible. You see, they come from rural areas, their IQ is quite low, and they have no respect for teachers. No matter how much money their parents spend on their education, they will ultimately do “kheti-baadi” (agriculture work) only. I suggest you somehow pass the time and call it a day.”
Her words shocked me.
“I see. Well, that doesn’t mean that I should pass the time. I feel, that as a teacher, I must help my students in the best way possible,” I replied.
“But, Why Put So Much of Effort?”
“Ma’am, the very first thing to understand is that I am not doing them any favor. The students are paying the fees, and so it is my responsibility to train them in personality development and help them improve their soft skills.”
“You see, I am not interested in commuting daily for about 75 kilometers from Delhi to Meerut to pass the time. Had passing time been my motto, I would have done that in a park in Delhi. I have many parks in the neighborhood.” I explained.
“And let me assure you, ma’am. I’ll leave no stone unturned to see my students grow as confident individuals. And forgive me for being blunt but I think you need to change your attitude a bit. Because you see, with this kind of attitude, I doubt if you’re doing any good to the students or yourself.”
Our conversation ended there.
But, then, every day she asked me about my progress with the students. She always used to say: “How do you pass the time, sir? What do you teach them for 50 minutes? I get restless after merely 20 minutes.”
So guess what I did?
I took her to one of my classes. She was there the whole time. Eventually, She found out I wasn’t passing the time.
You Can Change Your Future by Changing Your Attitude
So, what’s the rub here?
Things are neither good nor bad. It’s our way of seeing things that make the difference. So, when you’re presented with an opportunity to do some good work, don’t take it as a burden but as a chance to share your knowledge and talent.
In other words, simply change your attitude and your future shall change itself.
